Last week, I had an idea for a Spooky Valentine’s Day photo shoot. I was scrolling facebook on Thursday evening and saw a meme that inspired me.
The next morning, I immediately hopped on facebook messenger to ask Becca (@Aetherium Cosplay) if she had a dark coloured wig, and any availability this week for a photoshoot. She said she had just finished brushing out this thrifted wig, and sent me a photo. I was so ready! I sent her an idea of what I had in my head, a photo of the size-less dress, and we started planning.
The story behind this dress though, is so funny to me. I bought it over three years ago from a Value Village in Edmonton. I think the one on Whyte Ave even. It cost me $7.99. I brought it home and put it in my closet, knowing I wanted to do a Valentine’s style photoshoot with it one day. Valentines day 2017 came close and I tried to set up an indoor shoot with a couple I had done a model call for. But, the roads on the day of the scheduled shoot were so bad. We had to cancel.
So, the dress hung. In the back of my closet. Not forgotten about, but never worn. It had been slipped on one time to try to get an accurate measure of the size, but still hadn’t been used. Then this idea came to me, and I needed to make it happen immediately.
Getting Ready for the Spooky Valentine’s Day Photo Shoot
Quickly, the day came. I had packed the dress a few days prior, picked up some smoke bombs from the hobby shop, and even made an impromptu trip to Goodwill. I ended up finding this fabulous red, crochet lace, table cloth/curtain that was the exact colour of this dress I’d been hoarding.
When I showed up with the dress, Cody opened the door. I am pretty sure I tripped over my jaw, because their spooky sugar skull makeup looked phenomenal. Then, I handed over the dress, Becca slipped it on, and it fit her like a FREAKING GLOVE. I have never seen something so kismet. As we headed out to the car, we were giddy. But, we still had to find the perfect spooky location in the park. Without being in the way, and without too much of a crowd.
