So, you’ve found a photographer whose style you love. You’ve booked a maternity session with them. You’ve decided on the time, the date, and maybe even the location already. But WHAT DO YOU WEAR?!
The age old question of trying to figure out what to wear in maternity photos.
Here are a few tips that I have for anyone trying to decide on the best outfit for your session!
1. Something that fits
The biggest mistake I’ve seen when doing portraits for people, is that they sometimes show up in clothes that don’t properly fit them. Too big is manageable, safety pins exist for this! Too small, is not right.
When shopping for an outfit, borrowing clothes from a friend, or even when wearing a dress that I supply you want to make sure it FITS.
2. Something that compliments your location/style
Are you going for stylish and romantic, how about some lace and tulle.
Are you going for trendy and boho, how about some velvet and flower crowns.
Are you going for more “WOW” factor, how about a tulle skirt with lace appliques and custom designed for you?! (We can make that happen!)
3. Something that is “you”
Don’t wear something just because it’s “cute”, and don’t go out of your way to find an insane dress just because you saw it on pinterest. Dresses always photograph beautifully, but don’t force yourself into one if it isn’t your style.
We can still get amazing photos if you’re more comfortable in jeans and a knit sweater. I want these photos to scream YOU, not PINTEREST.
4. Something that is long
Long skirts, dresses, and pants that have a bit of flow to them are ALWAYS a good choice. They aren’t hugging you in all the places your soon to be toddler is going to be hanging off of. But they will elongate your body, make you look taller and slimmer (isn’t that what we all want) and ultimately flatter you the most!
5. Something that you might never wear again
This is a perfect opportunity to splurge and get that amazing maternity dress. You’re only going to be as big as a house for a few more weeks and you want to look AMAZING.
We can work with a designer friend of mine, show together, or even just use one of my dresses in stock to get those amazing results.
6. Something that looks great with, or without, accessories.
Sometimes wearing a shawl, adding a bouquet, wearing a flower crown, or going all out with necklaces and bracelets is exactly what we want.
But there are times in the session that we want our focus to be on you and your baby. Accessories can distract from that.
I love having mamas add in sweet accessories to add to their photos, but try to wear something that doesn’t NEED that wow factor to make it beautiful. Sometimes simple is best!!
So, let’s work together to get you amazing photos that you can cherish for the rest of your life. I can’t wait!!
